6th grade word fraction answer to example 6

A barrel of oil weighs 12 pounds. If 3/4 of it is used in cooking, how many pounds are left?

From “A barrel of oil weighs 12 pounds. If 3/4 of it is used in cooking,” we need to find the  amount of oil used before we find the amount of oil left.

Make the list of the 3 elements to find how many pounds of oil is left:

the amount in 1: 12 pounds, the entire barrel of oil

the fraction: 3/4

the amount in the fraction: the amount of oil used?

the amount of oil used= the amount in a fraction= the amount in 1 x the fraction= 12 x 3/4=9 pounds

Deduct the amount of used oil from entire barrel of oil to find how much oil is left:

12-9=3 pounds
